The only change to the gameplay comes in the form of the homing attack, which was first introduced in Sonic Adventure. Sonic must navigate his way through each of the maze-like levels, jumping on enemies, collecting rings and attempting to find the Chaos Emeralds, before duelling with his persistent nemesis Robotnik in one of the many boss battles. The gameplay remains almost identical to that of its predecessors and so anybody who has played a Sonic title in the past will feel right at home with the game's style. Sonic whizzes around the game's five zones with all of the speed and style that made him such an icon in the 16-bit era - and does so looking better than ever.
But can the latest Sonic title live up to the hype?ĭespite some issues with the size of the game and its difficulty (it's very easy), the answer is yes, but only just. Whatever your view regarding the 3D Sonic games, there can be no denying that a return to the second dimension - 16 years after Sonic & Knuckles - is enough to make Sonic fans the world over jump for joy. Some claim that Sonic's latest outings are as good as anything else on the market, while others see them as the devil's spawn sent to tarnish the prickly hedgehog's good name. Recent attempts to maintain Sonic's popularity have produced mixed results, especially since the series made the move to 3D. What better way to see in Christmas than with the return of another old favourite with Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1?
The Summer Of Arcade was a smashing success and introduced us to the likes of Limbo, DeathSpank and saw the return of Lara Croft. What a year it has been for the downloadable game.
